In February when I had tumescent liposuction on my calves, my husband drove me home after the liposuction procedure. My surgeon likes to see his patient the next day, but this would have meant a very long drive home after surgery then another very long drive back the next day for my check up. So he saw me on the 2nd day.
This time around, my husband and I decided to stay in Rotterdam the night before the surgery, as well as the night of the surgery so I could have the checkup the next day and then not have to worry about another long drive after I get home until about 9-10 days after. You would have thought that we didn’t know that we were staying in the hotel with all the bedding and towels we were dragging from the car up to the room.
Hotels are not prepped for tumescent liposuction
One of the things we knew ahead of time, since I had written the CitizenM Rotterdam hotel before making my reservation, is that they DO NOT want their bedding or mattresses soaked with blood tinged tumescent fluid. I know that my surgeon’s patients stay here because he recommends it to the patients that live more than an hour from Rotterdam, what I don’t know is if they had to pay extra for the cleanup or if they did the same thing my husband and I did.
Drag in our own bedding. I wish I’d have taken some photos, it was kind of comical.
What we brought to sufficiently protect the hotel room
- a few medical grade tarps to put under me
- an old, thick, sterilized at 90 degree Celsius ikea blanket to put on top of the tarps
- my own sterilized blanket to wrap up in
- several sterilized red and dark blue towels that wouldn’t show the stains
What we actually didn’t need to bring
Our own towels. Apparently, the hotel (make sure to check with yours) didn’t care about the blood stains on their towels and were more than happy to provide us with stacks of towels while I leaked all over the hotel room (luckily, the floor was laminate and not carpet). That was a good thing because we severely under estimated the amount of towels we needed this time around.
Other things that came up that we didn’t think about
Dinner, drinks and snacks.
Dinner was pretty easy since there were take out places all over (the CitizenM has a canteen with snacks, but no full meals other than breakfast). However, we failed on the snack and drink part. At 3am I actually had to send my husband down to the canteen to get me a little box of sushi since I was STARVING. I mean, stomach gnawing STARVING.
So if you’re going to stay at a hotel and have 7 liters sucked off a single body part at once, prepare for your body to go into overdrive trying to heal itself. I was pretty shocked at how hungry I was compared to the evening I got home after having my calves done. I had a normal appetite, but it was nothing like this.
In conclusion, staying near where you’re going to have liposuction reduces the stress a bit. All you need is a little bit of preparation and planning. Just make sure if you’re doing tumescent liposuction that you check to see what the hotel policy is on extremely messy (and blood stained) bedding/mattress so you’re not left with a nasty fee on your hotel bill!
