Back in 2014, the EU asked the US to allow 4 member state (Poland, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania) to become part of the visa waiver program which allows EU citizens to travel to the US without a visa (EU citizens still have to fill out the ESTA, but that’s something different). Well, needless to say the time the US has had to make this happen is up and the EU Parliament has called for action.
Basically, the USA has 2 months to decide if they’re going to let the 4 member states in and if they don’t (and there’s a very good chance Trump will say fuck you to the EU), Americans will no longer be able to travel to the EU visa free.
If you’re considering flying from the USA to Europe for your surgery, then you really need to pay attention to the news as well as the US Department of State’s website so you can make the necessary arrangements if this happens.
Now, don’t panic. In 2 months (so that would be around the 1st of May) IF the US doesn’t act and the EU decides to impose visas on Americans again, it’s not going to happen overnight. Very rarely does anything happen overnight. So if you’re travelling this year, you probably don’t have to worry. Just keep an eye on the news and the State Dept’s website.
If you’re Canadian or Australian, don’t worry. Your countries have or are in the process of reciprocating the visa free travel. It’s only the USA that’s currently in the doghouse.
